For the first time in our Nation’s history, the seat of the Speaker of the House has been vacated by a procedural motion. The motion was led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of FL, who forced a vote on Tuesday to boot Rep. Kevin McCarthy from the seat he has held for less than a year. Every Democrat in Congress gleefully voted to remove McCarthy in hopes it would contribute to chaos and division in the GOP. Eight Republicans, including Gaetz, made the motion carry with a vote of 216-210.
Gaetz has long been a critic of the Speaker, for not fulfilling promises and being too diplomatic with Democrats who actively fight for his party’s destruction daily. “[McCarthy] failed to adhere to the spending guardrails that we established. He wouldn’t advance the process that we saw on spending to have single subject bills, not continuing resolutions and end omnibus legislation,” Gaetz explained.
It wasn’t just the $2.2T budget deficit, either. Conservatives have criticized McCarthy for not doing more for border security. Also, very little has been done to hold the Biden crime family accountable, while Democrats pelt the former Republican President with nearly 100 ludicrous charges.
Many have ridiculed this move by Gaetz as too extreme and ill-timed. My own initial reaction was one of frustration. Democrat policies are grossly unpopular right now. Polling shows that the clear majority of Americans do not like the direction their country is headed. Trump is beating Biden in head to head polls so badly that Biden’s own media are turning on him. We have momentum headed into 2024. Do we really need this infighting right now? Is this a personal attack? Why would you ever vote with AOC on anything?
Unfortunately, principles are inconvenient things. Everyone expects Democrats to tax and spend. They know nothing about economics and believe in the same modern monetary theory that created this crippling inflation. If Republicans are supposed to stand for anything, it is fiscal responsibility. They have failed miserably, but of course, accountability is as common in DC as affordable housing. People who love this country elect Republicans because they expect them to stop the people who are trying to destroy America by inflating our currency with wasteful spending. Perhaps the next Speaker (hopefully Jim Jordan) will hold the line better for fear of losing his seat? At this point, it’s worth a shot.
So was this a move of treacherous betrayal of his party or loyalty to his country? I suppose we will have to see what the results bring. My problem with simply declaring the former as most of the conservative media have is that I listened to Rep. Gaetz’s reasons for his actions, and I couldn’t disagree with what he said. After decades of failed promises from Republicans, in which they have been fiscally indistinguishable from Democrats, I’m willing to see how this plays out. We can no longer tolerate the irresponsibility of the parties, particularly the adults who should know better. As Gaetz said prior to the vote, “I would just say if this House of Representatives has exceeded all expectations, then we definitely need higher expectations.”
