Reminiscent of the famous “How You Like Them Apples?” scene in Good Will Hunting, Governor Ron DeSantis of FL took a page from the playbook of Governor Abbott from TX this week, sending two planes containing some 50 illegal Venezuelan immigrants to the picturesque and politically ocean-blue island of Martha’s Vineyard. Apparently having reached his quota of unrequested deliveries from the Biden Administration’s clandestine illegal immigrant relocation service, DeSantis decided to turn the tables and give the country’s leftwing elites exactly what they have been demanding for years, a solid dose of official sanctuary state status. “States like Massachusetts, New York and California will better facilitate the care of these individuals who they have invited into our country by incentivizing illegal immigration,” read a statement from the governor’s office. In other words, you voted for this, you deal with it.
For the better part of the last decade, the drumbeat narrative from the coastal elitist left was that border walls are racist, no human is illegal and if you disagreed, you were a bigoted xenophobe. To paraphrase, “C’mon, we’re the wealthiest country in the world. The border states should do the right thing and welcome these economically disadvantaged folks with open arms into their communities because that’s who we are as a country. We would totally do the same thing if we weren’t completely geographically dislocated from this issue. We swear.”
And true to what they preach, the arrival of the immigrants on Wednesday put the Democrat stronghold of Martha’s Vineyard into action. Hotels, now off-season, offered long term shelter and a number of noted residents including Chelsea Handler, Spike Lee and David Letterman opened their own spare bedrooms to the illegal visitors to use until they could reside in the instantly approved affordable housing project to be built in Oak Bluffs. The immigrant children were immediately enrolled in local schools with suitable ESL programs and former President Obama is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the First Annual Diversity is Our Strength Parade to be held this weekend in Edgartown where Martha herself will hand over keys to the city to the Vineyard’s newest residents. Just kidding, none of that happened. They slept at a church, were given some inexpensive food and within 48 hours every last one was ferried off the island, destined for the barracks at Joint Base Cape Cod. It was a close call, but the swift removal of the immigrants ensured that the lily white demographics and lofty per capita income of Martha’s Vineyard would ultimately escape this crisis unscathed.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the media did not exactly portray the Governor’s transportation of the migrants to a majestic sanctuary as benevolent. DeSantis was instead attacked by the media, despite the fact that all he did was give every person involved exactly what they said they wanted. The illegal immigrants understandably wanted a better life in the US, but the state they occupied was run by law-following mean people. Massachusetts, on the other hand, is run by nice people with Coexist bumper stickers and “Hate has no home here” lawn signs. Would critics really have preferred the migrants stay in racist Florida? No, Massachusetts is where they belong and this wasn’t an act of cruelty. He sent them to Martha’s Vineyard, not Springfield or Roxbury. Besides, it was only fifty people. That’s nothing. If you went to a chain restaurant and only fifty people were seated for dinner, you’d wonder if there was a recent failed health inspection. To put numbers in perspective, MV not only has 17,000 permanent residents, but that number explodes to ten times that amount in the summer time. Yet, their excuse for removing these families was that they didn’t have the room or resources. Uh-huh. Something tells me the Cape won’t either. I wouldn’t be surprised if these folks are ushered west of 495 in short order because, you know, resources and stuff.
Interestingly, no one currently expressing outrage over DeSantis flying these people to the nicest location on the east coast had a problem with Biden illicitly flying and busing illegal immigrants all over the country for both logistics reasons as well as the added benefit of changing the demographics of key voting districts for future elections. Frequent Rio Grande drownings were also not a problem, nor did they take issue with the daily unspeakable instances of murder and rape at the cartel-controlled border. No, the media wants you to believe DeSantis is the mean guy for sending line-cutting illegal immigrants to a self-described sanctuary state.
This story highlights the key benefit to being a leftwing coastal elitist. By assuming prima facie moral stances on social issues, you get to project virtue as well as achieve a superficial sense of self righteousness without ever having to feel the negative effects of the bad policies you endorse. What would benefit this country greatly is precisely more of what DeSantis and Abbott are doing. These elitists need to be made to feel the consequences of the policies they espouse and we can extrapolate this strategy to more than just the immigration issue. What I’d like to see next is a tent city, complete with government issued syringes, spring up on Pelosi’s vineyard. How about Lori Lightfoot’s armed security detail goes on strike until streets are safe again? What about cutting off all fossil fuel derived energy to Gavin Newsom’s mansion? Let him install solar panels and a windmill. Sure, few elitists are likely to change their minds. Most of their self-esteem is based on their distorted understanding that they are better people than you or I, but we can at least point out their hypocrisy and tone deaf privilege just like DeSantis brilliantly did in this instance.
Two million illegal immigrants are estimated to stream across the border this year as a result of Biden’s lawless policy, costing border towns and the surrounding region billions of dollars and an indeterminable number of lives due to the inevitable gangs and fentanyl that accompany disadvantaged people seeking a better life. Keeping the Republic feels sorry for these people, but lawlessness just leads to more suffering and the weakening of our nation. Fifty, just fifty, of said immigrants on Martha’s Vineyard were enough to send the elitist left into a hysterical NIMBY tizzy. That demonstration of their shameless hypocrisy alone was worth the cost of jet fuel.
You eloquently state the obvious that liberals can’t seem to comprehend. Very excited to read more from you. We need to fight like hell for the sake of our kids because common sense is a thing of the past.
A spot-on, brilliant debut.
Fun with math!
According to a Harvard study, 73% of illegal immigrants end up on welfare. 2,000,000 x 73% is 1,460,000.
In Massachusetts full welfare benefits are reportedly at $48,000.00 per recipient per year. But let’s use half that at $24,000.
1,460,000 x 24,000 is $35,040,000,000.00. Over $35 billion.
