In the 1944 movie, Gaslight, a deviant husband is able to convince his wife that she is going insane by telling her the very real noises she hears in the house at night, as well as the lights dimming all by themselves, are not real. He assures her that her mind is playing tricks on her. Today, the term “gaslighting” is used in politics to describe a deception made so thoroughly that people begin to question their own perceptions of reality. While both parties have been guilty of gaslighting at some point, the modern Democrat party could hardly exist without it. Further, their partnership with a media committed to spoon-feeding Democrat party narratives gives them a distinct advantage in subterfuge on which they have grown existentially dependent.
The examples of gaslighting from the left are quite numerous and include cornerstones of party platform messaging. For instance, every Democrat knows that the rich do not pay their fair share in taxes. However, in reality, the top 10% of income earners pay 76% of all income tax revenue. The myth of the rich paying no taxes, though, is essential to a party that sustains itself on envy and class warfare.
More recently, you have probably heard the outrage over conservatives wanting to ban books. Of course, that would mean removing them from society so that no one can read them. However, there is a rather obvious difference between banning books and parents wanting books in elementary schools to be age appropriate and not include sexually explicit material, which is the real issue of contention.
Perhaps the most pivotal gaslighting perpetrated for Democrat party survival is the “attack on reproductive rights.” Of course, nobody is trying to take away anyone’s right to reproduce, but the left uses this euphemism because it sounds better than the right to kill unborn children. Also, counter to the narrative, the repeal of Roe v Wade did not make abortion illegal. It simply returned the governance of abortion policy to the states for democratic vote. The left lies about the threat of a national abortion ban, though anyone with even a cursory understanding of Constitutional law would know that such a ban would be struck down by the Supreme Court, just as Roe was. Abortion is now a state issue, per the 10th Amendment, but the Dems cannot let it go. If they have one divide and conquer issue, this is it. They need as many uninformed one-issue voters as possible to think Trump is threatening women’s rights, and somehow, even their lives. Dems need women to believe that abortion is the solitary measure of female empowerment, and anyone who wishes to put limits on it is a soldier of the patriarchy. The gaslighting around abortion has been critical and effective in getting uninformed women to vote blue at the national level. While Dems prefer this be a purely emotional issue, the GOP should hold a press conference to address concerns and explain to leftists how federalism works.
Democrat messaging has become synonymous with gaslighting. The party could not exist if they were truthful, so with the help of their faithful media, who will try to convince you to ignore your own eyes and ears, they lie incessantly. Biden is mentally fit. The border is secure. Crime is down. Jan 6th was an insurrection. Hunter’s laptop is Russian disinformation. The vaccines are safe and effective. Men belong in women’s sports and bathrooms. Child mutilation is affirming care. The list goes on and on.
Self-serving narcissists have always distorted the truth to deceive others into giving them their support. This technique can be effective even on a grand national scale, but it requires enormous swaths of uninformed voters. True, some people are willing to ignore their own senses and self-interest in exchange for a nod of approval from sociopathic elitists, but most Democrat voters simply do not know any better. They are fed the same narrative by a hundred spoons, and they swallow it all. This is why Democrats will always seek power by targeting the emotionally vulnerable and the intellectually lazy, on whom their tactics work well. Because the informed citizen does not vote Democrat, censorship and deception are necessitated to be the primary tools of the Democrat party.
